Richard Smallwood was a true musician, minister and LEGEND. My research on the intersections between gospel and classical music was born from seeing his music and his influence — showing me that there was a place for what was in me, and countless others. A “just for fun” from the vault. Anybody else ready to shut the laptop for 2025? It was such a joy to teach and perform my arrangement of “O Holy Night” with my Putnam County Festival Choir at DePauw University for the annual Holiday Gala. Written in memory of my grandfather (a great pianist), this arrangement brought together influences from him and quotations of Claude Debussy’s famous “Clair de lune”, which I used to play regularly for him. Thank you to our instrumentalists Dr. Hyeseon Jin, Laura Allen, and Elly Froehlich.
